For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.”*
Worldly wisdom. what does the world say we need? what do we really need? what do we get with education? what are we teaching? what are we learning? ought we to believe and accept everything we are told? why does it feel that people are trying to control our thoughts? are they building a wall of education to get us thinking or so we stop thinking?
**
"We don't need no education
we don't need no thought control
...all in all it's just another brick in the wall"
Be smart, be rich, be successful, be popular, be secure.... are these things attainable, are they wise, are they what we truly seek and long for? Who are we fooling when we say we have all the answers?
So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish. Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom. So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense. But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles,Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.***
I know that many will say that I am the one who has been indoctrinated and am controlled by others, that maybe my parents have successfully socialised me and I have no thought control, that everything I say about Jesus is a brick in the wall to my ignorance, and my blindness to what is truly out there. But I want to counter that and say, that those who have not truly listened and taken seriously the message of Jesus might be the ones who have been persuaded by the world into thinking that we have all the answers and don't need a God to reveal himself to us, in order to find out if he is there and what he is like! And the crazy thing is, God has revealed himself!
It may sound foolish or like nonsense but I trust God's wisdom over man's wisdom any day. The sign of the King on the cross for his people, the wisdom of someone humiliating themselves so we don't have to be humiliated. It's not how I would have done things, but hey, I'm glad about that, because I know I'm not the wisest person out there and I'm pretty sure my way wouldn't have fixed the problems of this world!
